Feature
Traditionally, a marriage ceremony signals the start of a new life together, but when Edie Windsor and Thea Spyer fly to Canada to get married, it is a celebration of the 42 years they have already shared. This delightful and moving documentary directed by Gréta Olafsdóttir and Susan Muska (THE BRANDON TEENA STORY) creates a loving portrait of each woman and their life together, from the closeted, pre-Stonewall 1960s to 2007, when, with Thea’s health fading, the couple finally legalizes their love in front of a Toronto judge. Still images throughout the film show both women from youth to adulthood and illustrate how Edie and Thea navigated their lives of ordinary milestones, their pathbreaking political and personal activism, and their dedication to each other and self. EDIE & THEA creates an unforgettable, intimate picture of how a life is made together. A grand – and grandly human – love story. —Brandie Erisman
